A BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE
Indonesian authorities, researchers, and varying bodies are collaborating to build a miniature tropical rainforest that will serve as a model for the reforestation program in Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara.
The project aims to restore 82,891 hectares of barren land for the new capital. This project is the first of its and thus some experts caution that the program may be a bit ambitious.
The miniature rainforest project focuses on sustainable reforestation practices. The project will serve as a blueprint for the larger reforestation effort in the new capital. Ambitious or not, it would pave the way for future restoration efforts if this is successful.
GOOD INTENTIONS
Misguided tree-planting initiatives in Africa are endangering vital ecosystems. Research indicates that an area the size of France is at risk due to restoration projects in unsuitable areas.
According to the research, 52% of tree-planting projects in Africa are done in savannahs, with nearly 60% using non-native tree species. Introducing these new species posed the risk of introducing invasive species.
Though forest restoration efforts are needed now more than ever, we must be very careful about how these initiatives are defined and implemented. One key thing is ensuring that landscapes classified as “forests” actually are. Misclassifying areas such as savannahs as "forests" under existing definitions could lead to misplaced reforestation. This would disrupt or destroy ancient grasslands and impact wildlife and communities that are dependent on these ecosystems. Good intentions and efforts at reforestation could have unintended consequences.
